Great Daily Reminder

This has been a great daily dose of information. Its difficult to stay in a positive state of mind but using this calendar and each morning reading something positive, I find that it helps set the tone for the rest of the day.

The essence of The Secret changed my life!

I believed in inner power and the substance of the Universe, however my life was still extremely frustrating at times and i didn't know why. Several years ago somebody recommended the DVD of The Secret to me so i went with it and, after watching it, felt totally inspired, so much so I handed my notice in at work to develop myself.

A couple of years later and the biggest change was in my mind and mental outlook on life. The Secret set me on a journey of discovering the original new thought authors from late 1800's and slowly, but surely, I have seen changes. Last year I discovered two authors and everything clicked into place, namely Neville Goddard and Joanne St.Clair. These authors really heightened the journey of discovery which The Secret set me on, resulting in a six figure lottery win earlier this year.

I would definately recommend this book and the DVD, but just sticking to this and nothing else is not enough. If you really want change you must keep discovering your inner Spirit and its relationships to life. Neville taught me more about the imagination and its use, and Joanne St.Clair put it all into perspective in a very modern and down to earth way.

Don't tear it apart!

We all need reminders from time. This is a compilation of daily inspirational messages. I recommend do NOT tear the pages out. I use a little bookmark and can keep reading them on a daily basis, year after year. A little stimulation at the start of each day can go a long way toward paving a path to wholeness.

Great collection of essays, especially on non-European/American cinema and contemporary television programmes. The introduction is particularly of interest to anyone wishing to get to grips with the ideas around disability representation and some of the key debates such as 'normalcy' and the Social Model, It is clearly written and covers many of the major areas. Would definitely be of help to early career researchers or students of film/media or disability studies.

About the Author
Trude Lisagor (1951- ) taught elementary school for twenty years in Northern Virginia. She continues to help children with reading, writing and math on Bainbridge Island, Washington, where she lives with her husband, Mike. Her grandmother, Trude Grunwald (1899-1949), immigrated to Los Angeles from Wuppertal, Germany in 1938. Her strong sense of what matters most lives on in her writing.

There is something about reading a book that holds the spirit of a woman's female lineage or woman line. Small Things touches a center that holds true for all women, bringing us back to where we came from. Trude has captured that very essence. Her Grandmother's beautiful and mindful writing reminds us that we all have a story within us, and Trude was given the blessed opportunity to share not only her story, but her Grandmother's story as well. Speaking Across Generations

Small Things: Words From My Namesake is a lovely book filled with warmth and wisdom. The mingling of Trude's thoughts with those of her grandmother make a rich blend and illustrate that the generations, at a deep level, are not so different and yearn for the same things. This small book reminded me to think about the people who are and have been in my life and how they have influenced me.

About the Author
R. Charles Moyer earned his B.A. in Economics from Howard University and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Finance and Managerial Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Moyer is Dean Emeritus of the College of Business at the University of Louisville and Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship. He is Dean Emeritus and former holder of the GMAC Insurance Chair in Finance at the Babcock Graduate School of Management, Wake Forest University. Previously, he was Professor of Finance and Chairman of the Department of Finance at Texas Tech University. Dr. Moyer also has taught at the University of Houston, Lehigh University, and the University of New Mexico and spent a year at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Dr. Moyer has taught extensively abroad in Germany, France, and Russia. In addition to this text, Moyer has coauthored two other financial management texts. He has been published in many leading journals, including Financial Management, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Finance, Financial Review, Journal of Financial Research, International Journal of Forecasting, Journal of Economics and Business, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Industrial Organization. Dr. Moyer has been a member of the Board of Directors of King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and is on the board of Capitala Finance Corporation, the board of Enterprise Community Fund I, the board of US WorldMeds, and the board of Summit Biosciences.

Nice Basic Introduction - Need some update on examples

Circos is a very powerful visualization tool. This book provide an introduction about how to use circos for the beginners. It is a easy read, especially for the window users. But when you start to run the examples, there are some problems which might need readers to explore a little bit more to find answer ( I found the google group discussion is really useful):

(1) This book is use circus 0.62-1, there are newer versions. especially for later examples, you need to switch _SIZE1_ to var(size1); _color_ to var(color) to make the example to work.
(2) Graphics::ColorObject need to be installed through cpan for both window and linux system
(3) Some linux user might need to add a soft link "sudo ln -s /usr/bin/env /bin/env" to make the example work
(4) If you use newer version, you need to define the following parameters in the first example:
auto_alpha_colors=yes
auto_alpha_steps=5
(5)page 30 the parameter is chromosomes_order not chromosome_order. Generally use the code come together with the book as the starting place will help reader avoid any typo on the book.

Overall I enjoy the read and found this tool to be really powerful. It interested me to follow up a little deeper on the tutorials and course on the web.

I do hope that the author can summarize at the beginning about all the possible type of graphs this tool can generate and what is the biggest advantages in using this type of graph than the traditional type of graph. The example are nice, but take some time for me to realize the real power of this tool.

Nice examples but leaves Mac users behind

Circos is a great data visualization tool that provides novel ways to view data. Initially developed for genomics applications, there are several great examples of using circos to display non-genomics data. While this book provides some nice examples of how to use circos for data visualization, I fear it will miss the mark for the intended audience, especially Mac users. In the preface, Mr. Shenk states two goals:
1. To make circos available to a broad audience (which I read to mean non-programmer)
2. To show how circos can be used in the social sciences

While the example chosen by Mr. Shank is good, which is introduced in the second chapter, I fear many users (at least those on a Mac) will never get that far. Mr. Shank provides detailed instructions for installing Perl and circos on a windows machine (which I did not try) but provides one set of instructions for installing circos on a Linux or Mac. While it is correct that the Mac OSX comes installed with Perl, it is not the standard installation that is found on most Linux machines. Following the instructions in the text will not get circos running on your Mac (for that, read this great how-to: [...] ). I suspect most novices on a Mac will stop when they can't actually get circos running.

Once I got circos running on my machine (using documentation and examples from the web) I still had difficulty actually running the examples in the book. Some files were missing from the example files distributed with the book, and in general the examples tend to be focused on Windows users.

There is really very good documentation for installing and creating circos diagrams on the web. The best thing this book provides are example text files for creating diagrams using non-genomics data. If you are a Mac user and want access to that, be prepared to do a fair bit of trouble shooting on your own (or with your favorite search engine).

good starting book for learning circos

As someone who is intrigued by the powerful visualization tool of Circos, it's almost impossible to find a book on the topic. Finally, Tom Schenk has written a book to fill in a much needed gap. The book guides you through the installation, configuration and provides with some basic examples. Circos itself is implemented in Perl, so if you are familiar with the language, it is very straightforward to install in any platforms. I wish the book explains more about the many settings included in configuration text files and provides more examples in bioinformatics field. Overall, the book is a good place to start for learning Circos and really does a good job in explaining the basics working on Circos. After that, you would have to explore more on Circos website and its community resource.

The author preserves the oral-history structure and keeps several of the characters from the first book (including Cormac Wallace and Mathilda Perez), but he veers off in a new and frightening direction. The story is set in the years immediately after the New War; Archos R-14, the AI who very nearly destroyed the human race, is dead, but that doesn’t mean humanity’s troubles are over. Here’s the short list: a civilization to rebuild; a growing discord between robotically modified humans (victims of Archos’ horrific experiments) and the unmodified; dangerous robotic creatures running rampant; and a new kind of threat, one even more dangerous than Archos. The writing here is much more visceral and polished than it was in the earlier novel. In fact, the first several pages of this book’s first chapter, in which a character is attacked by a robotic parasite, are more frightening and more memorable than the entirety of Robopocalypse. Daniel Wilson holds a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. His previous titles include HOW TO SURVIVE A ROBOT UPRISING, as well as five other popular science books. This is his debut novel.

Excellent read - better than the first

Some background: I'm a professor of Robotics. My whole career is saturated with robots, and what we want robots to be.

This book is excellent, for two reasons: 1) It's a great story, off the beaten path of "terminator robots sent to kill humans because... I dunno, robots are evil." Instead, there's a complexity to the technological characters that is really unique in literature. 2) The technology and ideas are plausible!!! Most of the time, I don't read a lot of science fiction any more, because as soon as something impossible is presented as part of the story, I have a hard time suspending disbelief, and I get bumped out of the story. That was not the case here. I was actually surprised with new ideas about a possible future of the world with robots, with only a few minor cases of disbelief-suspension for the sake of enjoying a good fiction. I enjoyed Robopocalypse, but Robogenesis is better. It's rare that a sequel is better than the first book.

there are robot/human zombies, which may be a plus for some readers

Robogenesis by Daniel H. Wilson is a highly recommended sequel to Robopocalypse - and there are robot/human zombies, which may be a plus for some readers.

"In its last days, the thinking machine known as Archos R-14 was trying to know humanity. It mastered the art of capturing a human mind. When it died, it left behind the tools. I found stories trapped in patterns of neurons. Using scavenged hardware, I took three accounts straight from three minds and I lined them up from beginning to end and back again. Three times to tell it. Three times to understand. They say history is written by the victors, but this right here is told by its victims. My name is Arayt Shah, and this is the story of how I won the True War."

In Robogenesis we learn that artificial intelligence Archos-14 has survived the war. What was unknown after the war was that Archos had many copies of his code hidden in caches around the world. Now that code is awakening, but there is also an earlier version of Archos which calls itself Arayt Shah. Arayt Shah believes that the True War is between artificial intelligences. "I decimated the human race, regrettably. But I did so with one purpose: to forge a hybrid fighting force capable of surviving the True War—a war that has been initiated and is being fought by superintelligent machines. Instead of simply discarding your species, as the others would, I have transformed your kind into a powerful ally."

While you thought the Robot War was just between humans and robots, it is robots vs. new robots vs. freeborn robots. Add to the mix humans against the not-quite human modifieds and parasitic dead (think robot/human zombies) as well as the robots. The idea of sentient machines fighting humans, with or without the machine/human zombies, is a grim enough prospect.

Robogenesis is organized into three parts, based on three characters that were also in Robopocalypse: Lark Iron Cloud, Mathilda Perez, and Cormac Wallace. There are also other characters from the first book that come back for this sequel along with some new characters. Although Wilson provides some back story, if you haven't read the first book you may want to before this one.

I felt like Robogenesis was actually a stronger novel than the first because the stories and the plot seemed more focused and polished, however this could be from reading the two novels back to back. The pace is again fast and furious. There is still a Terminator feel to these novels for me (and World War Z for others). For science fiction fans this may be a good choice. Wilson has a PhD in Robotics so he knows his AI. I liked this one but have to admit I'm tired of the whole zombie craze. A solid airplane book.

Engaging, fun . . . won't change your life, but hey, it's summertime

I'll be honest. I enjoyed the heck out of this book which sitting in the sunshine by the pool in Mexico. I'm not going to write a paper on it, read too deeply into the relationship between man and machine, or the blurred lines of consciousness, humanity, and technology, but it's a page turner (or rather 'edge toucher' since I'm on a Kindle).
