Why most of the schools are boring and what you can do about it

Most of the schools for most of the kids are boring or to put it in another way, they are the killers of innovation. Even the most curious kid with an insatiable desire and a healthy dose of intellectual energy knows what it feels like after 5-10 years of schooling, some even remember vivid accounts of how their energy was sucked out of their souls. It is a cliché to say that education is very important but then what kind of radical reforms we witnessed during the last 100 years?

I don't have any particular expertise in the field of education, pedagogy or child development, but I spent a lot of time studying cognitive science, was involved in psychology research, and practically taught kids how to program (heck, I even read Mindstorms: Children, Computers, And Powerful Ideas from Papert long time ago!). I'm not a foreigner to Piaget and read from books from and on Vygotsky. But I heard about Montessori only about a few months ago (well, to be fair I must admit that Papert's book mentions Montessori, only in one page, in a single sentence and negatively). If Montessori method of education was something very new, or just a few years old, or even one or two decades old, I would not consider my situation very odd. Or if the method of Montessori was put to use only in a few schools in a few distant countries I would forgive myself for my ignorance. But to my surprise I learned that Montessori method is about 100 years old and put to test daily in many countries including many European ones as well as USA (some of the most famous names in my field turned out to be educated in Montessori schools: Larry Page and Sergei Brin (founders of Google), Jeff Bezos (founder of Amazon.com), Will Wright (the inventor of "The Sims"); read "The Montessori Mafia" from The Wall Street Journal for more information).

I'm so much thankful to Dr. Lillard for presenting a highly readable yet scientific, evidence-based account of this wonderful method of education. I'm yet to witness a Montessori school in practice and I did not send my child to such a school, so maybe I should keep the skeptic inside me very alive. But if half of what Lillard describes is true then I'd say it'll be very difficult for me to choose any other type of education for our child. "Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius" answers almost all of the questions that a parent or a researcher can ask. And whenever there is a concrete answer you are provided with relevant results from scientific literature. If your question is still open to discussion, if there is no conclusive evidence then Lillard does not hesitate to state this, too. She also stresses a few points from Montessori methods which are almost proved to be false by scientific research (but these points are very few, Lillard shows that a very big part of Montessori method is supported by the evidence).

There are other books explaining or advocating Montessori method but I believe no book yet surpassed this book in terms of scientific rigor. Thanks to the comprehensive overview by Lillard, I can clearly see the problematic points of mainstream educational methods and how negatively they affect children. I can also easily see how Montessori method solves a lot of those problems without introducing them to begin with. Many times I found my self marking pages from the book, smiling to myself and thinking "yes, that's the way it should be!".

If you think your child, or any child is something more than an empty vessel waiting to be filled by "knowledge" by a teacher, if you ever said to yourself "if only they let me be engaged with whatever I was interested in so that I could learn much more and have fun", if you think that a human being's destiny is probably something more than trying to fit into stereotypes and find herself of a fine 9-to-5 job, if you ever thought that accomplishing something beautiful, overcoming a real challenge was a feat in itself and you did not any extrinsic motivation for it, your inner drive was the source of greatest pleasure... Well, then you owe yourself to read this book. This book may not change your life, or maybe you'll never have the option of sending your child to a Montessori school for this or that reason. But one thing for sure, this book will completely change the way you look at and think about educating children and preparing them for life. And every minute of it will be well spent.

I bought this book along with others for a semester project I was conducting on Montessori Education. Angeline Lillard's book was most helpful because she used child development, statistics, and logic with supported detail. If you are not fully sure of Montessori, this book is an excellent starter. I would strongly recommend!!!

About the Author
Guy Harrison has worked with database technologies for more than 30 years.  He is the Executive Director of Database tools R&D for the Dell Software Group and has is the author of five books on database development and optimization.  He has written a monthly column for Database Trends and Applications for more than 10 years on Big Data, NoSQL, and Application development. Guy lives in Melbourne, Australia and has no leisure skills.

A pleasure to read!

This book is a pleasure to read. It delivers on the promises in the description. It's a very informative overview for an old-schooler who wants to delve into the "next generation" database systems. It's very well-written, so it's not overwhelming. It doesn't talk down to you, but is not annoyingly informal or patronizing. Best of all, it gives a lot of detail, and gets it all right! Until I read this book, most books I found were either focused on one topic, or got a lot of things wrong. Guy does not bash, oversell, or make inaccurate statements. And, he makes it eminently readable. It's a pleasure to find a book with the breadth, depth, accuracy, and readability of this one! Cheers to the author for sharing his findings with us!

This book aims to help you choose the correct database technology, in the era of Big Data, NoSQL, and NewSQL, how does it fare?

This book is aimed at “enterprise architects, database administrators, and developers who need to understand the latest developments in database technologies”. Some existing knowledge of databases (relational and NoSQL) is useful in understanding the book.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Part I: Next Generation Databases

Chapter 1 Three Database Revolutions

The book opens with a diagram showing the timeline of major database releases, being divided into: pre-relational (1950-1972), relational (1972-2005), and Next Generation (2005-2015). This book is concerned with the Next Generation databases, but first a bit of history and context...

The chapter takes a brief look at the first database revolution, involving Database Management Systems (DBMS) such as hierarchical databases (e.g. IMS) and network databases (e.g. IDMS) , running on mainframes. These systems were relatively inflexible and difficult to maintain.

Next, the second database revolution is examined, concerned with the widely used relational databases (RDBMS). These are based on relational theory, with its tuples, relations, constraints, normalization, and transactions. The widespread adoption of SQL enhanced their usage.

The chapter next looks at the third database revolution, initiated by massive internet growth which created pressure on RDBMS scalability. Realising this, Google, the largest website, looked at how the growing amounts of data could be processed in a timely manner. Google published 3 influential papers, one about a distributed file system, the second about distributing processing (MapReduce), and the third about a distributed database (BigTable). These ideas later formed the basis of Hadoop.

Other related concurrent changes occurred in technology, including the growth of cloud computing, providing elastic resource usage and cost. Also, the use of JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) enabled easier storing/serialization of objects to disk, helping overcome the object/relational impedance mismatch, eventually leading to data being stored in document databases (e.g. MongoDB).

The old relational architecture was re-examined by Stonebraker in 2007, who suggesting making changes relating to in-memory and columnar databases, this became NewSQL. There is a brief overview of the non-relational database explosion. The author acknowledges NoSQL is an unfortunate term, since it defines what the database isn’t rather than what it is.

The chapter ends with the conclusion that there is no longer a one-size-fits-all database solution. Unlike the relational model, the NoSQL databases do not have a common architectural pattern. The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), social media, and ever increasing amounts of (often unstructured) data, all indicate the growing need for scalable Next Generation databases.

This chapter provides a great overview of each database revolution, in the context of broader technology changes. It is the best overall explanation of what happened in database world, together with its underlying reasons, I’ve read.

There are a few small errors e.g. “... a huge number of relational database systems emerged in the first half of the 2000s”, this should read ‘Next Generation’ instead of ‘relational’.

The chapter is easy to read, with useful explanations, considered discussions, helpful diagrams, inter-chapter references, and website links. These traits apply to the whole of the book.

Conclusion

This book aims to help you choose the correct database technology, in the era of Big Data, NoSQL, and NewSQL, and succeeds. The book is generally easy to read, with useful explanations, considered discussions, helpful diagrams, inter-chapter references, and website links.

The main types of NoSQL database (key-value, graph, document, columnar) are described, as are the newer relational database features (NewSQL). It certainly helps explain the recent database changes in the context of web innovation.

It might have been useful to have a matrix containing details of what type of database to choose for specific scenarios. The book has useful (but unannotated) links for further information at the end of each chapter, these would be better annotated, and placed on the page they are referenced. The book has no introduction (except the back cover), and although the book is split into 2 sections, they are not discussed – a roadmap would be useful.

This book will prove useful to anyone who wants to know how to choose an appropriate database solution in these changing times, and how we arrived at the current mixture of disparate databases. Highly recommended.

Great book

This book is a must for all coaches. It explains the Carolina system. Which history has proven has been a good system. The book explains alot. It answers questions that you have not even thought of yet. The special section by Bob Spear of the Air Force Academy was wonderful. It explained the shuffle offense to perfection. If you are a coach and looking for an offense to run, read this section on the shuffle. You will like this offense and all the variations that are well explained in this section. The one thing that could be explained more is the famed Carolina 4 corners. They could have discussed it more, and given more examples of how it works. That is the only negative of the book. The motion offense and it's rules are explained in great detail. If you are looking for a zone offense, take a look at the triple post offense. The different defenses are explained very well. Smith's famous run and jump defenses are diagrammed and explained in great detail, along with their other defenses This book shows you how you can set up your style for your team. I am constantly referring back to this book during the season.

Team Improved with this Book

I have always been a fan of Roy Williams who knows well the system of Dean Smith. So, by default, I am a fan of Coach Smith. Previous reviews have aptly explained the features of the book but I wanted to focus on an aspect that directly led to my team winning more games over the past two years.
Described in the book is a statistical chart that Smith used to check his team's productivity taking into account the results of possessions. Every time your shooting percentage is high and your free throw attempts are high, you win. (obviously) But the chart comares your success to the opponent. Even in a win by 4 points, my team's productivity was less than the opponent. Tournovers were too high. We were giving away possessions. I presented this information to the players and they could see with their own eyes the data. We "threw away" possessions that didn't yeild shots. Players can be told about taking care of the ball; players can watch their mistakes on game film. But this formula rating their points per possession seemed to drive the message home. (by the way, the second time we faced the team be beat by 4, we won by 20 and had 2 turnovers. Their focus was so much higher)
