A Former USAF Airman Recounts His Assignment at Minot AFB, ND...

"Frozen Hell: The Memoirs of a USAF Security Defender in Minot AFB" authored by Patrick Thomas is a candid and humorous account of his USAF enlistment assignment at Minot AFB, ND. The military recruiters fail to mention the less than desirable places to be stationed-- Minot is one of those bases. Located in the plains and badlands of the Dakota's, with hot dry summers and severe -79 degrees below zero with the winter wind chill factor, there is was little to call home about. To his credit, Senior Airman Thomas took it all in stride.

It is pretty creative the things the troupes do to fight the mind numbing boredom, staying awake, and combating stress while out on the isolated locations monitoring check points, control areas and towers, usually riding around in two man patrols. The shifts hours are long and grueling. It wasn't surprising Charlie Flight was like family, Thomas had a lot of great stories about the men he worked with, yet little to say about his wife Samantha and their daughter born while he was stationed at Minot.
For recreation he and his buddies went hunting and fishing-- and of course there were plenty of drinking stories! In addition Thomas discussed some unusual happenings in the hangars and bizarre things that occurred with no logical explanation Not at all surprising, he chose not to reenlist, though he transferred to Law Enforcement (Military Police) which is usually considered better duty than Security Police.

In 1975-76, 186 miles of West Minot AFB, in Northeastern Montana was Glasgow AFB. My young husband got orders there right out of Basic Training/Security Police Tech. School. For an Airman First Class getting newer spacious 3 bedroom base housing (built in 1963) was quite nice. The Northern Lights reflected from Alaska could been seen from the flight line on occasion.
There were many similarities in my husband's experience compared to Patrick Thomas, also from military life in general in this highly recommended read. Many thanks and appreciation to the author for the e-ARC for the purpose of review.

Before The Dawn- GREAT final book!

Before The Dawn is the conclusion to the After the Ending series. There were a lot of story-lines to wrap up and questions to answer but authors Lindsey Pogue and Lindsey Fairleigh did a phenomenal job of finishing off the series with a bang! There is a lot of excitement, character development, and personal growth in the story. We get more involved with our entire group of favorite (Zoe, Dani, Jason, Jake, Harper, Chris, Sanchez, and the rest of the gang). A lot of series falter when trying to conclude their series, but Before the Dawn was a great final book and left me satisfied with how everything turns out. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this book lives up to its expectations!

I can honestly say that I was somewhat surprised by this book. I’ll admit, the third book in the series was probably my least favorite, and reading the third and fourth book in the span of just a few days had me a little burned out. I went into the fourth book full of trepidation that it was going to be yet another long drag through a narrative where very little happened. Luckily, that wasn’t so.

Let me first say that the writing in Before The Dawn was pretty damn flawless. I didn’t notice any obvious typos, awkward sentences, or grammatical errors. Not a single one—which is pretty amazing. The narrative flowed smoothly at a nice pace throughout, and other than a few short moments at the beginning of the book (Anna’s sections of the book weren’t my favorite), I didn’t feel the need to skim.

The characters were unique and complex, and though I sometimes had difficulty throughout the series telling Dani/Zoe and their respective J-named boyfriends apart by tone, I enjoyed their company. Their world was rich, fraught with danger and uncertainty, and unlike the previous book, had some pretty great action oriented moments. This was probably one of my favorite books in the series thus far—it may even be my favorite. The story felt wrapped up by the end, and though it had it’s stab at an HEA ending, it wasn’t perfect—which kept it from falling into the familiar romance genre trope that often ends with everyone pregnant, married, and all the bad guys defeated. Okay, so maybe there’s a smidgen of trope involved, but it was pulled off really well.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and I think it was a fantastic ending to the series. I would highly recommend it to anyone who’s been following the series thus far—including those who, like me, may not have enjoyed the third book quite as much.

A Satisfying Finale for an Exciting Paranormal Series

Finally, after many harrowing adventures and plenty of tragedy along the way, Zoe and Dani are finally together (and Zoe is in her right mind). They’ve managed to settle down on a small farm with their handsome hunks, Jason and Jake, and their close-knit group, including such personal favorites as Harper, Sanchez, and Kris.

So, naturally, such harmony gets blown to smithereens quite early on, and when you’ve got super powers, the explosions are big and exciting. When Jason is seriously wounded and disappears, his friends mount a desperate search and rescue mission, but even as hope fades, the key to what truly happened may be hidden within Dani’s mind.

And what’s going on with the Colony, Zoe’s mom, and the evil general? You can bet your buttons that The General isn’t sitting back, twiddling his thumbs and letting bygones be bygones after his Re-Gens revolted.

Before the Dawn brings back Zoe and Dani for one final encore as they struggle to keep alive the hope they’ve just started to build. Safety and peace come at a steep price, and their adventures aren’t over.

Personally, it was enjoyable to jump back into this exciting world and meet all my old friends, (especially Harper). The book kept my attention as I tried to solve the puzzle of Jason’s disappearance. The middle picked up when Zoe and the gang set off on a rescue mission that quickly went south.

The ending was satisfying, but I’ll let you get there to find out for yourself. If you liked the other books in the After the Ending series, then Before the Dawn is a no-brainer.

This book should be 'the bible' for everyone involved in knowledge management processes. Holland, as one of the complexity theory founders, decribes the essentials of how complex adaptive rules, in relation to the variability of the environment, determine knowledge dynamics and learning capabilities.
Key message of the book is the way that processes of induction, both cognitive and subcognitive, determine rule making, rule adaptation and environment modeling.
With this work Holland (et al.) was the first to close the gap between cognition, complex adaptive systems and knowledge processing. He also provides a sound computational base for the theories presented, opening possibilities for implementation of 'the induction theory' in real world applications.

Good book, weak Kindle edition

The book is very useful, but the Kindle Edition I bought is problematic, because the equations are small and will not rescale or zoom, either on my Windows PC version of Kindle software, or on my Android Kindle software. A friend who got the book in PDF format of course does not have this problem.

I most enjoyed the "conversational" style; you are Dr. Miskin's guest and he's taking you by the hand. The wealth of experience is obvious when you see how detailed and thorough this book is. It is most comprehensive, beginning with "growing your site", "location" and then staffing, budgets, record keeping and the hopeful future sale of the site. No step is left out, this is really a blueprint or manual, if you will, for a rewarding and successful career! I gladly recommend it because there are methods and solutions that apply to many business ventures.
