Excellent!

Although I have several bibles, including one of the Catholic Bibles in order to read the seven books not contained in the KJV,, the Ampllied Version of the KJV is my favorite all time bible. It is the one used by Joyce Meyer and Creflo Dollar and is easy to read side by side with the KJV which defines and exolains the KJV with footnotes. I highly recommend this book and have bought it for several people in my family as gifts.

The binding began to pull away from the spine on my second read. Not my second read through, mind; the second time I deigned to open the thing up. The margins are narrow to the point where you have to pull the binding away from the spine to read all of the words, which exacerbates the issue of the shoddy binding in the first place. I actually threw mine away. Frustrating and disappointing - two symptoms of doing business with the "Bible industry."

King James is the standard for all bibles but it it hard to understand for most people, especially teens. This Bible puts two versions side by side so anyone can read and understand the meaning of any part of the King James version.

About the Author

Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Vincent N. Parrillo experienced multiculturalism early as the son of a second-generation Italian American father and Irish/German American mother. He grew up in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, developing friendships and teenage romances with second- and third-generation Dutch, German, Italian, and Polish Americans. As he grew older, he developed other friendships that frequently crossed racial and religious lines.

                                                                                         

Professor Parrillo came to the field of sociology after first completing a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in English. After teaching high school English and then serving as a college administrator, he took his first sociology course when he began doctoral studies at Rutgers University. Inspired by a discipline that scientifically investigates social issues, he changed his major and completed his degree in sociology.

                                                                                         

Leaving his administrative post but staying at William Paterson University, Prof. Parrillo has since taught sociology for more than 30 years. He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and has regularly conducted diversity leadership programs for the military and large corporations. His keynote address at a bilingual educators’ conference was published in Vital Speeches of the Day, which normally contains only speeches by national political leaders and heads of corporations and organizations.

                                                                                         

Prof. Parrillo was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic and Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Pisa. He was the keynote speaker at international conferences in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden. He has met with government leaders, nongovernment agency leaders, law enforcement officials, and educators in more than a dozen countries as a consultant on immigration policy, hate crimes, and multicultural education. He has done on-air interviews with Radio Free Europe and Voice of America, appeared on national Canadian television, and been interviewed by numerous Canadian and European reporters.

                                                                                         

Prof. Parrillo’s ventures into U.S. media include writing, narrating, and producing two PBS award-winning documentaries, Ellis Island: Gateway to America and Smokestacks and Steeples: A Portrait of Paterson. Contacted by reporters across the nation for his views on race and ethnic relations, he has been quoted in dozens of newspapers, including the Chicago Sun-Times, Cincinnati Inquirer, Houston Chronicle, Hartford Courant, Omaha World-Herald, Orlando Sentinel, and Virginian Pilot. He has appeared on numerous U.S. radio and television programs.

                                                                                         

Prof. Parrillo is also the author of Strangers to These Shores, tenth edition, Contemporary Social Problems, sixth edition (Allyn & Bacon), Cities and Urban Life, fourth edition (with John Macionis), Diversity in America, second edition, and Rethinking Today’s Minorities. His articles and book reviews have appeared in journals such as The Social Science Journal, Sociological Forum, Social Forces, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Journal of American Ethnic History, and the Encyclopedia of American Immigration. He is General Editor of the Encyclopedia of Sociology for Sage Publications. Several of his books and articles have been translated into other languages, including Chinese, Czech, Danish, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Swedish.

                                                                                         

An active participant in various capacities throughout the years in the American Sociological Association and Eastern Sociological Society, Prof. Parrillo has been listed in Who’s Who in International Education, Outstanding Educators of America, American Men and Women of Science, and Who’s Who in the East. In 2004, he received the Award for Excellence in Scholarship from William Paterson University. In March 2005, the Eastern Sociological Society named him its Robin M. Williams, Jr. Distinguished Lecturer for 2005–2006, and elected him as its vice president for 2008–2009.

It's a juvenile novel, yet it has many rather sophisticated themes.
Telepathic twins are used to keep exploration ships in contact with Earth. The fact that telepathy (in this story) is faster than light affects the physics community. Pat and his brother Tom are complex and have deep-seated emotional issues about being split up and going on a mission where the odds of the traveler returning are quite slim.
One ages, one doesn't, due to time dilation effects, and upon returning their meeting is far from simple.
In the meantime, habitable planets are discovered, Pat has to deal with teen and adult social issues aboard a crowded ship on a years long mission, most of the sister ships are lost in accidents, much of the crew of his ship die from disease or hostile aliens. He's hardly a young man himself upon return, even if his years aren't great.
And how should he feel when the faster than light aspects of telepathy lead to faster than light spaceships, leaving him a relic of a forgotten past when he does return?
Time for the Stars is action packed and scientifically consistent, with realistic and deep characters. The shipboard content is real in a way only a Naval officer like Heinlein could make it. This book and the others in his juvenile bibliography are what sucked me into science fiction, and a major contribution to me being the writer I am today. Take that as advice or as a cautionary tale, but this book is excellent even 50 years later, even after I've matured 25 years since first reading it.

One of Heinlein's Very Best

In this story of telepathic twins, Heinlein does better than usual at balancing characters, logic, sentiment, science, and suspense. Each aspect of the novel is fascinating, from the revelation of the twins' telepathy to their ultimate separation by 63 light years of space and some 80 years time. Heinlein carefully makes future society and star travel seem real, all while making his characters live. If you like good old fashioned space exploration adventure with some profound insight thrown in, this is your best bet. I've read this book twice, and again found I could not put it down.

Telepathic twins, Tom and Pat, were identical. One would live on earth and age gracefully, while the other would stay forever young and roam the galaxy, but each is equally important to the other.

Another great book from the best, Robert Heinlein. His portrayal of the future is almost real. Hard to put down once you start.

Hashimoto - Clear and Simple

My mum has Hashimoto. As Polish is her first language...learning about this dis-ease in English can be overwhelming. With a book in Polish on Hashimoto she was able to clearly understand and make the necessary changes in her life. Izabella is a very gifted and copetent teacher/guide on this little know about condition. She offers practical, easy to understand and comprehensive information which will get you onto the path towards healing and feeling better. With some simple changes, patience and perseverance you can kiss thyroid disease goodbye. The final straw for me was when conventional wisdom (western doctors) wanted to remove my mothers thyroid...I thought there has got to be another way - and there is. Please do yourself a favour and get this book. You deserve it!

Love Life

I devoured Love Life. Never have I read a more honest, disturbing, and brilliant account of the way uncertainty in love and life can translate into obsession and erotic fury. I recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid to take a magnifying glass to the darkest corners of the self. The truth is, Shalev's seemingly bottomless reservoir of fresh, gorgeous imagery and her nearly flawless command of language make even that view beautiful. I can't imagine that anyone who reads this book will be left unaffected; when i finished it I felt eviscerated. But pleasantly so.

An intriguing storyline, but nearly unreadable prose

I started reading "Love Life" because it is being made into a movie by Maria Schrader, the famous German actress (who is also infamously philosemitic). So, I wanted to see what the big deal was. Also, a friend had highly recommended the book to me.

I was deeply disappointed.

The basic plot is intriguing, but I found Shalev's prose to be almost unreadable. Nearly the entire novel is told in stream-of-consciousness style. Most sentences are extended narrations with unusual punctuation, combining numerous ideas. Here is a real example:
"Your father's sure he was there on some sort of security job, living on his rich wife's money, a guttersnipe who married money and now he's come back to show off the airs and graces he picked up in Europe, and I saw that her eyes were fixed on the mirror on the opposite wall, watching the words coming out of her mouth, dirty, venomous, and again I thought, who knows what she's capable of saying about me, and I felt suffocated next to her and I said, I have to go, and she exclaimed, not yet, trying to keep me with her like she tried to keep him, stay with me until he goes, and I asked, why, and she shrugged her shoulders in a childish gesture, I don't know."

That may not seem seem bad, but nearly every sentence in the novel is like that. 290 pages of it. Ultimately, the writing style distracts from the plot, which is never a good thing for a novel.

I loved this book. it may be different, and it's either you LOVE it or you dont like at at all. at first you dont understand what is going on in Yaara's mind, falling in love in such an obssesive way with her father's friend, an older and not so attractive man who doesnt treat her the way you would like to be treated. but as you keep on reading you start understanding Yaara's inner complicated world, and many things are starting to make sense. I also love Zeruya Shalev's way of writing. it's almost poetic,and the character seems to be driffting from one episode to the other...very much worth reading.

About the Author
Barbara Kiefer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University where she teaches courses in Reading and Children’s Literature. Originally trained in art education, she taught grades 1-5 in several regions of the U.S. and in overseas schools. She has served as chair of the Elementary Section Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English and as a member of the NCTE Executive Board and was a member of the 1988 Caldecott Award Committee of the American Library Association. She has also served as chair of the NCTE/CLA notable Trade Books in the Language Arts committee and the Children’s Book Council/International Reading association Joint Committee. She has published articles and book chapters about reading and children’s literature. She is the author of THE POTENTIAL OF PICTUREBOOKS: From Visual Literacy to Aesthetic Understanding, the co-author of AN INTEGRATED LANGUAGE PERSEPCTIVE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL with Christine Pappas and Linda Levstik and the sixth and seventh editions of Huck et al.: CHILDREN’S LITERATURE IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
