classic text from 1958 revised

The first edition of Ted Anderson's text on multivariate analysis was published in 1959. At the time it had no rivals. This book gives a thorough mathematical treatment of classical multivariate analysis. It is extremely well organized. Development of the multivariate normal distribution and its properties are given a thorough and rigorous treatment. The Wishart distribution is derived. Properties of the multivariate normal distribution are applied to problems of classification, principal components, canonical correlation and tests of hypotheses including the use of Hotelling's T square.
As a graduate student at Stanford, I audited Ted Anderson's multivariate analysis course, that he taught out of the first edition of the book. It wasn't until 1984 that he revised the text incorporating some new materials including the bootstrap method.

This is an advanced course for graduate students in statistics. It is the best source for a rigorous mathematical treatment of the important results from the theory of the multivariate normal distribution. However, it is not easy reading for someone who is interested in applications but does not have strong training in mathematics (particularly linear algebra). For applications and approaches when the normal theory doesn't apply, the book by Gnanadesikan is very good. There are now many good theoretical and applied texts on multivariate analysis including the text by Eaton, the one by Srivastava and Khatri, one by Rencher, one by Johnson and Wichern, and the one by Mardia, Kent and Bibby. Naik and Khattree have written a very nice applied multivariate book that demonstrates the applications using SAS software every step of the way.

There are now many subspecialties including cluster analysis, principal components, correspondence analysis, factor analysis and classification that have complete texts devoted to them.

Anderson has now published a third edition to this book and it incorporates bootstrap methods

Multivariate analysis for mathematicians

I wanted to know some mathematical details from multivariate analysis. Many books on multivariate analysis are written for those who are happy to skip all these details - and often, I too am in this category. But this time I wanted proofs and mathematical explanations. I found what I wanted in Anderson's classic text. It is a masterly work of scholarship. The author is an authority on the subject; his writing is clear - if you like reading mathematics; the proofs are there; the text contains several hundred exercises - and they are not all research level exercises; hardly any typographical errors as far as I can see. A reasonable background in linear algebra, multivariate calculus and mathematical statistics will be helpful in reading this book. I have been around long enough not to read too much into the word "introduction" used in the title. The book will not help you to learn how to use computer packages for multivariate analysis; this is a book about mathematics.

The standard in intoductory (mostly Guassian distibution) multivariate statistical analysis.

What can U say, but Anderson is one of a couple of authors to have written seminal text on multivariate statistical analysis. One should have a background in univariate statistical analysis (e.g., Hogg, or possibly Rao). Although Anderson reviews matrix theory, at least a university level course is required. Required background also includes at least a full series of university-level calculus - multivariable and advanced - some complex variable theory would also be helpful as well as familiarity with advanced functions (e.g., Arfken). Also, it would be helpful to either read and/or have had a course in applied multivariable statistics (e.g. Johnson).

Pros:
It reviews both matrix algebra for statistics and univariate & linear models.
The text is thorough in the topics it covers.
It is terse in some of in its derivations - if that is your preference.
Anderson's MO is an excellent balance of both mathematical rigor, but not as stifling/limited as the standard Theorem-Lemma-Corollary, etc., format.

Cons:
It is lacking on examples and applications.
This addition de-emphases some of the more modern Vec/Vech-matrix calculus that is more common in, say, modern econometrics.
Many of the derivations would be easier with a background in Fourier analysis and KL/orthogonal-function expansions.
The tables are a bit lame.
Some theorem derivations would benefit from a tensorial representation.

About the Author
David J. Ridges taught for the Church Educational System for thirty-five years and is in his twenty-fifth year of teaching at BYU Campus Education Week. He has taught adult religion classes and Know Your Religion classes for BYU Continuing Education for many years.

He has served as a curriculum writer for the Sunday School, as well as for the seminaries and institutes of religion of the Church. He has served in many callings in the Church, including gospel doctrine teacher, bishop, stake president, and patriarch. He and Sister Ridges served a full-time eighteen month mission, training senior CES missionaries and helping coordinate their assignments throughout the world. He is currently serving as the executive secretary for the Sunday School general presidency of the Church.

Brother Ridges and his wife, Janette, are the parents of six sons and daughters and make their home in Springville, Utah.

Disappointing; better books available

Somewhat disappointing offering by David Ridges. It doesn't really go into any significant detail about the symbolism on temples, much less in them. What he does mention is superficial and misses some main points. For example, he lists the Big Dipper on the west wall of the Salt Lake temple as "Represents that those who are lost may look to the priesthood for guidance and thus find their way back to God." A nice sentiment, but what does the priesthood have to do with the big dipper?
If he'd done a bit more research he would have discovered that the big dipper is the means by which we locate the north star, which is the symbolic center of universe: All the other stars and planets appear to rotate around it. The temple is also symbolically the center of the universe, the place where the worlds meet, from the Latin "tem"; the point where a vertical and horizontal lines meet; symbolizing god meeting man, or heaven meeting earth. So the big dipper is a very apt temple symbol for finding the way to god.
The section on symbolism in the scriptures pulls wholesale from his other books, with most of the examples not having anything directly to do with temples. A general discussion of symbolism and metaphor in the scriptures is fine, but it's not what the book is advertised to be.
Overall the book came across to me as a somewhat lazy compilation put together quickly to get another book out. It's OK, but there are better books on the subject out there.
For a much more comprehensive but still relatively short and easy to read overview of temple and endowment symbolism I recommend "Your Endowment" by Mark A. Shields.

Not impressed

I was expecting a real book - this was more of a pamphlet in a small hard cover quoting well worn LDS church published material only - don't waste your time. Spent 1/3 of the book on parables not even related to the temple - pretty misleading title, very superficial and not well written at all.

I am a avid reader and research authority in religion, especially LDS related material. I have discovered the clarity and deep spiritual writing of David J Ridges. I have everyone of his writings and use them in teaching the true gospel of Jesus Christ. His most recent book, "Temples: Sacred Symbolism, Eternal Blessings...." is nothing short of total guidance from the Holy Ghost. So much of his writing and teaching is left to the readers level of understanding. If you don't understand something or disagree with his finding, I would encourage you to pray for guidance for the truth shall be manifested unto you, if you are ready, by the gift of the Holy Ghost. Get this book, study it, and memorize it. Use it and put it to the test by attending the Temple with your family search files no less than every week. I can promise you will discover much growth as you climb the ladder of life.

Unforgettable and Courageous Struggle from Brokenness to Victory

Faces Within The Mirror
Faces Within The Mirror tells the true story of Barbara Hudson who shares her life story and how she got free from her past, but not without some grave struggles and accumulation of disappointments and misfortunes along the way. The book opens up into Ms. Hudson being birthed into a family of horrid dysfunction. How did she stand a chance? But God! But God! The book takes you on a rollercoaster ride. Just when you think your stomach can not sink any further, there is another dip, yet another sharp curve that knocks you out of your seat. The writer understands that it is not about merely putting words on a page. She made the words come alive! This book has it own life, as though it was living and breathing just as you and I. The feelings and emotions are all there, only a gifted writer could do such.

The book touched the depths of my soul. I cried knowing that some people can be so "evil" but at the same time walked away enlightened, inspired, motivated and desiring to go deeper in my relationship with God. Many times we do not want to take inventory of self because we do not really want to see the reflection in the mirror. How do you expect to journey on the road to "freedom?" As Ms. Hudson used Tori Amos' quote in the book: "...but you have to crawl into your wounds to discover where your fears are. Once the bleeding starts, the cleansing can begin."

Faces Within The Mirror is more than just a collection of words on some pages, it is about a spiritual awakening. Ms. Hudson puts aside all things and allows us to enter into her world. The dying she must have done to self, not many have the courage to do so. As she stated, you can either choose to judge her or celebrate her. I celebrate her! I celebrate her story! There is no testimony without a test and some moaning. The book made that very clear!

I highly recommend the book as it is divinely inspiring. While reading, I felt like Ms. Hudson was saying, don't "just be" inspired but "live" inspired. After reading the book in one day, my tomorrows will be different.

A Book that Will Become Part of the Dream of Your Heart

Forever after you read A Ring of Bright Water, the beauty, wonder, and humor of this book will gently surface with a ring of bright ripples in the waters of you mind. I am never able to remember this book without simultaneously wanting to laugh and to cry-and always with a sense of awed wonder. This is the true story of Gavin's befriending of otters (or perhaps we should say of the otters' decision to befriend Gavin.) In one scene, on the first night Gavin has one of the otters in his home, the otter carefully watches Gavin get into bed and pull the covers to his chin. The otter then crawls in beside Gavin, lies on its back, and pulls the covers to its own chin. Other scenes describe Gavin's losing efforts to make certain parts of his cottage off limits to otters. Gavin never for the rest of his life produced prose that so translucently coveys the beauty of the waters around his cottage, or the sense of his own evolving life and emotions. Reading this book is giving a gift to yourself. It is one a dozen that I always look for used to give to friends.

Moodie takes readers to a diversity of settings, including households, tribal council meetings, and wedding festivals, to reveal the aspirations that are expressed in each. Crucially, she demonstrates how such aspiration and identity-building are strongly gendered, requiring different dispositions required of men and women in the pursuit of collective social uplift. The Dhanka strategy for occupying the role of adivasi in urban India comes at a cost: young women must relinquish dreams of education and employment in favor of community-sanctioned marriage and domestic life. Ultimately, We Were Adivasis explores how such groups negotiate their pasts to articulate different visions of a yet uncertain future in the increasingly liberalized world.
